Post a HijackThis log. Also, never use any third party programs to change what services start with your computer. The only safe one is Start -> Run -> Services.msc I would not use MsConfig for services as it can cause issues.

Process NOT service. Spybot has a tool that removes process entries at startup. I use Spybot for that also.
Just be careful not to remove windows critical start up items like the dlls and such. Usually recently added entries will be at the top with a yellow highlight. Also the process normally has a name, some of them dont. If you are not sure, look up the name of the exe on Google.

Services tell what programs to run, those programs appear in the Process list.

is this due to our computers different stats, and if so, how much does this mem usage actually slow my computer? and how can i improve it? is it ram, vid card, processor....
it is a laptop, 2ghz 3200 64bit, 128 dedicated video ram, 200m ati , 512 system ram
thanks for any help

200k is normal. The 60k your friend mention was most likely read right after he started GW, which is usually that amount at the login screen. So all systems normal, save for your 512 ram, which is seen as the minimum requirement for gaming systems. Also from looking at your task manager, you have lots of unnecessary software running.

lol omega you should just stop.. what tauren and replicant said is true- you can do everything your doing in spybot without installing anything- run msconfig for your startup processes or you can go direct in the registry if you'd like (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Run).. and services.msc let's you shut down uneeded services (svhosts)

I usually end up with about 4-5 svchosts running, so going into services.msc will allow me to see which one's doing what and shut down accordingly?

Based on your settings, you may wish to change your pagefile to a constant amount, so that Windows doesn't keep trying to change it for you.
Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> Performance frame -> Settings button.
Now navigate to the Advanced tab -> Virtual Memory -> Change button.
Next select the Custom option and set it like so:
Initial Size (MB): 768
Maximum Size (MB): 768
Press the Set button and reboot. This will cause a change to the size of your pagefile and it will now be set to a permanent size.
The setting of 768MB for your pagefile was based upon the information you have provided that you have 512MB RAM. Going by the rule of thumb for pagefiles you would determine what to set it to by how much RAM you have.
Example, taken from your situation:
512MB RAM * (times) 1.5 = 768MB.

If you have 4-5 running you're doign well then. Each svchost executable has a certain function, that's why it appears so many times in there.

ah that's a good suggestion tarun.. setting your pagefile to a custom size- don't let windows manage it.. basic things.. tweak xp is pretty awesome if your a little more advanced- it allows you to easily tweak ntfs/memory/the way windows handles swaps and reinit your cache- that and ace utilities for a good registry cleaner is about all you need on a gamers rig.. I use powerstrip too for overclocking my ati card and as a game launcher

It's also good to defrag the pagefile after setting it to one set size. An excellent utility written by Mark Russinovich called PageDefrag. Paging and Registry file fragmentation can be one of the leading causes of performance degradation related to file fragmentation in a system and PageDefrag will take care of it. Just run PageDefrag and then the built in Windows defrag utility and there should be a noticable change in performance.

also, after i set pagefile to 768-768, as my charachter ran in the game, my bytes/second occasionally dropped from 1-2k down to 100. it happened enough to be immediately noticable. it this caused by the pagefile change, or just laggy internet?

Lets see you have 512 MB system RAM, and using an onboard 128 MB videocard. That means the videocard probably uses your system RAM and doesn't have its own like 90% of onboard videocards. That leaves you with 384 MB of RAM for what you want to do.
See the problem is that most cheapo graphics cards that come with laptops don't have their own memory and instead use your system memory to store textures instead. This not only gives you less RAM to use for your own applications but also makes the graphics themselves take longer to load and look much worse than normal as well as adding an additional +128 MB for all 3D graphics processes under the windows memory system.
If you do the math, take the amount of memory that Guildwars is supposed to use then add on 128 MB for the video memory that your onboard shared graphics card is eating up and there's your number.
I suggest you try this: go into your bios and find the setting for AGP aperture size and set it to about 64 MB or even try 32 MB and you will notice changes. By the way, press Windows Key + Pause while in windows and check how much RAM your system is reading just to be on the safe side.
EDIT: yep it looks like your 200M ATI graphics card is a system memory "thief." All that memory usage is indeed stolen by an integrated graphics card. --> http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=19607
